F.A.Q.

  • What are the basic requirements to submit?

    • You must be from Pennsylvania, have lived there for a period of time, or spent enough time there to have a story to tell.

    • All demographics are welcome to submit (geography, race, class, sexual orientation, etc). The more submissions and perspectives the better!

    • You can still submit a piece if you have a fictional story or poem idea that takes place in Pennsylvania and carries the themes and feelings mentioned previously in its content. Or, if you are writing on behalf of a friend or family member.

  • What are the thematic guidelines?

    • The basic idea is to give the reader an idea of how wonderful yet weird Pennsylvania can be. The subject matter can be pretty much anything, but your piece has to give off a sort of rustic, magical realist, euphoric, or hauntingly beautiful aura.

    • Unfortunately, I cannot guarantee that your piece will be included, as there are specific thematic guidelines as mentioned before.

    • If you have any questions in regards to if your ideas will qualify, feel free to send me a short synopsis of your idea before you start writing.

  • What written formats can I submit?

    • The submissions can be of any written form and any length (short story, novella, character study, memory, rhyming or free verse poetry, haiku, etc).

    • Your piece does not have to be fully non-fictional or traditionally written. You are very much encouraged to take creative liberties and be experimental.

    • Old pieces that you’ve written in the past are more than welcome to be submitted.

    • Photos or documents may also be used in the piece as supplemental material.

  • How will I be credited and what about copyright?

    • You can be credited if you so choose! If not, your submission will be kept anonymous except for first and last initials, age, and general location if the writer permits.

    • In order to protect peoples’ privacy, names, locations, and personal info about yourself or those in your piece should not be too revealing.

    • Copyright for any and all submissions remains with the submitter, and there are no plans in the foreseeable future to republish any of the content on the website nor the submissions that are received. If plans do materialize, permission will be requested from the author.

  • Who made the project's logos and branding?

    • The official logos were designed by the amazing Commonwealth Press, a Trade Union screen printing shop and graphic design house based in Pittsburgh.

    • The art accompanying each piece was scanned from “Know Your State” tourist books made by the Pennsylvania Department of commerce in the early 1950s.

  • Is there a deadline to submit?

    • No! There is no deadline. Submissions will be accepted anytime and the site will exist on the internet indefinitely until the end of time.
